Kindle Cloud Reader Works on BlackBerry PlayBook August 10, 2011

Learned today that Amazon had quietly released Cloud Reader.
Went to the Kindle homepage and clicked on the Cloud Reader link which takes you to https://read.amazon.com.
Initially it wouldn’t load so I turned off Private Browsing and refreshed and the page loaded.
Quickly discovered as this was designed for the iPad that all of this needs to be done in portrait mode as I couldn’t scroll or see the button to continue in landscape.
The Cloud Reader allows you to download your books for offline access. Win.
I chose to hide the URL and buttons (had to be in landscape mode to do it) so I had nearly the full screen for the reader.
I also bookmarked https://read.amazon.com and added a shortcut to it to the home screen.
Should be quite functional until a native app is released or until they clean up the app to have official PlayBook support.

I typically don’t share much of a personal nature here, but this picture of my beautiful soldier-wife makes me smile every time I look at it.
She is an Army Reserve nurse.
…I am still grinning.
Did Quickr Connectors Steal Notes’ Mail Buttons? August 5, 2011

In Benoit Maillet’s post Where are the buttons for send mail?, Benoit describes an issue which we have also seen in deploying Notes 8.5.2FP2 Standard on Windows 7 64-bit. I commented on that post and thought I would post here as well.
The text on the toolbar buttons and the frames around the text boxes in the header disappear when composing messages.
Workarounds seem to be to keep the sidebar closed or refresh with F5 and the buttons return, frames still missing on the text boxes. Have done both with mixed results. I have no plans to run in basic mode to work around the issue.
Seems the root problem is the Quickr Connectors. I tested on my machine running the latest HF7 version. Once I uninstalled the Quickr connectors, the problem went away.
Not sure what exactly is happening here. Hope a forthcoming Notes or Quickr hotfix will resolve the issue.
Notes Client ODS Upgrades August 4, 2011

Attended Paul Mooney’s Adminblast session at IamLUG where one of the tips was to upgrade the ODS of client databases on client upgrade. See IBM Technote here.
This reminded me that during our 8.5 client upgrades, we saw a handful of PCs with consistent Notes crashes because clients’ names.nsf files were still on the 20 ODS (IBM support confirmed that this was a known issue which we resolved by the workaround in the technote).
According to sources that aren’t my memory, ODS 20 is from release 4 which was released in 1996. As you might guess, the affected people had been with the company for years. (I am surprised at the reminder of how long we have been running Notes).
Not a major problem given so few were impacted but a good reason to have been compacting client databases to the 8.5 ODS upon upgrade.
